Depuis l’antiquité le portrait a occupé une place centrale et ambiguë dans la hiérarchie des genres de l’histoire de l’art. De par son sujet ; l’homme créature à l’image divine capturé dans un instant révélateur de son histoire, le portrait devrait se hisser haut parmi les genres prestigieux. Néanmoins, il a souvent été blâmé à cause de sa part de vanité, d’égocentrisme...de profane. Ainsi, les portraits auront évolué dans l’écriture de l’histoire entre le divin et le païen. Et c’est leur part de pêché (sans le pêché) que Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal nous invite à savourer avec son œuvre, Mes Sept Portraits Capitaux.
A l’occasion de la sortie du livre « Ma galerie de portraits » (Manuella Editions) la galerie Brachfeld a l’immense plaisir d’accueillir le travail de Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal. Une exposition organisée autour d’une sélection de sept portraits en mots, ceux avec lesquels elle partage un lien privilégié, parmi la centaine réalisée par cette artiste. On y rencontre des personnalités du monde des arts, de la politique, du cinéma, du théâtre, de la musique et de la mode.
Tous ces portraits ayant été réalisés à partir de commandes émanant soit de magazines (Vogue, Visionaire, etc.), soit de maisons de disques et de couture (Balenciaga et Yves Saint Laurent notamment), soit de particuliers. Dans la démarche de cet écrivain, le spectateur ne manquera pas d’être interpelé par la réanimation des liens mythiques entre l’artiste et le commanditaire, entre le créateur et son sujet.
Ainsi, Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal nous offre une œuvre qui renoue directement avec la tradition du portrait peint, du portrait frontal où le sujet se trouve exposé en majesté, et son âme vient investir la plume de cette artiste pour qui les mots sont les outils de prédilection pour imprimer non seulement le caractère d’une personnalité, mais un instant, un lieu, une foule, une odeur, une chanson et tant encore.
STÉPHANIE COHEN CHAPTAL est née en 1967. Elle est l’auteur de pièces de théâtre (dont Le Mobil-Home, 1990), d’un livret d’opéra (L’Empio punito, Opéra de Leipzig, 2003), d’un roman (Camille Judith Claire, Denoël, 1998) et d’un recueil de poèmes (Poèmes futiles, Dangin/ Steidl, 2005). Son roman, Le Roman nu, est en cours de publication. En 2006, elle a exposé ses portraits en mots à la Galerie Haunch of Venison à Londres.

Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal
Art history has always known portraits. This kind of expression representing men, as a divine creation, creature in the image of God, should have been seen as one of the holiest and more dignified types of artistic production. Nevertheless, given the fact that portraits do hold a certain proportion of vanity and self-absorption they have always been criticized. Their part of profanity has always gotten in the way of their consecration. Thus, the evolution of portraits in art history will always be in between the holy and the heathen. And it is their sinful aspect (without the sin) that Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal invites us to admire with her latest work, her seven deadly portraits.
To accompany the launching of her book « Ma galerie de portraits » (Manuella Editions) the Brachfeld Gallery has the great pleasure to welcome Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal’s work. A show surrounding a selection of seven word portraits, those that share a special bond with the artist. Where we can fin personalities of different worlds such as, arts, politics, movies, theater, music and fashion.
All of the portraits are the fruit of commissions coming from magazines (Vogues, Visionaire, etc.), record labels, fashion brands (Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent), or individuals. Within the writer’s approach, the beholder will be attracted by the reanimation of the mythical bonds between the artist and the commissioner, the creator and his subject.
Thus, Stéphanie Cohen Chaptal, proposes a work that revives the tradition of painted frontal portraits, where the subject is exposed in majesty. And his soul overtakes the writing hand of this artist for whom words are the tools to print not only the nature of a personality, but also an instant, a place, a crowd, a smell, a song and yet so much more.
STÉPHANIE COHEN CHAPTAL was born in 1967. She is the author of several theater plays (such as, Le Mobil-Home, 1990), of an opera libretto(L’Empio punito, Leipzig Opera, 2003), of a novel (Camille Judith Claire, Denoël, 1998) and of a poetry collection (Poèmes futiles, Dangin/ Steidl, 2005). Her latest novel, Le Roman nu (The Naked Novel), is about to be published. In 2006, she exposed her word portraits at the Haunch of Venison gallery in London.
